Refugees
More than 90% of the individuals and families we serve are immigrants and refugees from Africa and the Caribbean Islands. Many live in the Greater Philadelphia area. In the Philadelphia region, studies show that the number of immigrants and refugees from Africa increased more than any other immigrant groups between 2000 and 2016. In Pennsylvania, 8% of foreign-born are from Africa and 14% of foreign-born are from any of the Caribbean Islands.
In the county of Philadelphia, African and Caribbean immigrants make about 5% of total population. They reside mostly in Southwest Philadelphia, West Philadelphia, Olney, South Philadelphia, North East Philadelphia. Outside of Philadelphia, Delaware County, Bucks county, Montgomery county, and Chester county also have large black immigrant populations.
In general, African and Caribbean immigrant and refugees work in many sectors: transportation, (taxi-drivers), homecare and personal care, education, hairbraiding, small business, nursing, cleaning, daycare, restaurants, etc.
